medi Soft OA is an unloader brace for osteoarthritis affecting one side of the knee. It works on the 3-point principle: pressure applied at three places along the leg tips the load away from the worn compartment, so less weight passes through the painful side of the joint.

It is for medial or lateral osteoarthritis of the knee, for one-sided load relief after cartilage surgery or cartilage regeneration, for one-sided stress reactions or stress fractures of the upper shin bone, and after a meniscus procedure.

How much relief you get is set by a locking mechanism you can adjust yourself: each step up the scale clicks audibly, the strongest setting is level 9, and your orthopaedic technician sets a starting level with you before you take the brace home. Compressive medi Airtex+ fabric stabilises the joint and improves proprioception, double-sided hinges and two circular straps add hold, the area behind the knee is left free of straps and given extra Lycra, and a patella cut-out helps you line the brace up. The slip-wrap design and quick fasteners make it easier to get on and off.

All indications needing relief of one side of the knee by the 3-point principle with additional physiological guidance, and where limits on the range of movement are needed, such as:

Medial or lateral (unicondylar) osteoarthritis of the knee
Cartilage surgery or chondroplasty, for one-sided post-operative load relief where needed
Unilateral stress reactions or stress fractures of the tibial head (the top of the shin bone)

Not suitable for: bilateral (bicondylar) osteoarthritis of the knee, meaning wear affecting both sides of the joint.

Each Configuration covers two cases at once: the same brace takes weight off the inner side of one leg and the outer side of the other. Pick the value that names your leg and your correction — varus is bow-legged, with the inner side of the joint worn, and valgus is knock-kneed, with the outer side worn.

Configuration is the leg the brace is built for and the alignment it is made for. Varus alignment is bow-leg, which loads the inner (medial) side of the knee; valgus alignment is knock-knee, which loads the outer (lateral) side. medi pairs them: one version covers a left leg with varus or a right leg with valgus, the other covers a left leg with valgus or a right leg with varus. If your prescription names the alignment or the affected compartment, follow it. If you're not sure which one you need, ask your prescribing clinician - your alignment is not something we can determine for you.

Hand wash only, in lukewarm water (about 30°C/86°F) with a mild detergent
Close all hook-and-loop (velcro) fasteners, straps, and zippers before washing to protect the fabric
Do not use fabric softener, bleach, or harsh chemicals; do not dry clean
Remove and clean any removable pads or cushions separately with water or mild soap
Air dry fully -- do not tumble dry, use a hair dryer, or dry in direct sunlight
Apply skin creams or lotions after removing the support in the evening, not right before putting it on, since they can affect the material's properties

medi publishes these steps for putting the brace on. Your orthopaedic technician sets the relief level with you first, and should show you the routine once before you do it alone.

Before you start, check that both relief mechanisms are in their starting position close to the knee joint and that the switch points to the white dot.
Open all the quick-release clasps on the front by turning them slightly, and open the hook-and-loop fastener.
Bend the leg to about 70 degrees and pull the brace onto it.
Draw the brace up until the fabric sits just below the kneecap, with the kneecap centred in the opening and the middle of the hinge level with the top edge of the kneecap; check the brace is straight on the leg and not twisted.
Close both hook-and-loop fasteners on the upper part of the brace.
Fasten the quick-release clasp for strap 1, then strap 2, then straps 3 and 4.
Set the relief: push or pull the mechanism along the numbered scale until it clicks, releasing and refastening the lock when you reduce the pressure. Level 9 gives the most relief; adjust within the range your technician agreed with you.
Walk a few steps and correct the position if the brace has moved.

To take it off, release the switch, push the relief mechanism back towards the knee joint and return the switch to the white dot. Undo all the quick-release clasps, open the hook-and-loop fastener and pull the brace off downwards. Close the fastener and all the clasps again afterwards so nothing on the brace gets damaged.
