The M.4s® comfort is medi's rigid four-point knee brace: a light alloy frame down each side of the leg, hinges that copy the knee's own movement, and wedges that set how far the knee is allowed to straighten and bend.

It is for a knee that needs guiding and stabilising, or relieving in two directions: cruciate ligament ruptures and collateral ligament ruptures, treated with or without surgery, knee instability, meniscus procedures and cartilage surgery.

The four-point principle applies pressure at four places along the leg so the frame carries the joint rather than the soft tissue around it. Wedges change without screws, using tweezers built into the brace: extension can be set at 5 degrees of hyperextension, 0, 10, 20, 30 or 45 degrees, flexion from 0 up to 120 degrees, and immobilisation at 0 to 45 degrees; extension 0 and flexion 90 are fitted on delivery. The physioglide hinge follows the knee's rolling and gliding movement so the brace does not fight the joint. Two lengths are made, 41 cm and a 34 cm short version, each as a left or a right.

  • Hand wash only, in lukewarm water (about 30°C/86°F) with a mild detergent
  • Close all hook-and-loop (velcro) fasteners, straps, and zippers before washing to protect the fabric
  • Do not use fabric softener, bleach, or harsh chemicals; do not dry clean
  • Remove and clean any removable pads or cushions separately with water or mild soap
  • Air dry fully -- do not tumble dry, use a hair dryer, or dry in direct sunlight
  • Apply skin creams or lotions after removing the support in the evening, not right before putting it on, since they can affect the material's properties

medi publishes these steps for putting the brace on. A rigid brace is normally set up by a fitter first; ask to be shown once before doing it alone.

  • Open all the straps, sit on the edge of a chair, pull the brace up the affected leg and bend the knee to about 45 degrees.
  • Position the hinges so the centre of each one, at the height of the extension wedges, is level with the top edge of the kneecap and slightly behind the side centre line of the leg, and check the brace is straight and not twisted.
  • Fasten the lower front calf strap, then the upper back thigh strap, keeping the knee bent and pushing both hinges towards the back of the leg.
  • Fasten the lower back thigh strap, checking the hinges have not moved in front of the midline of the leg.
  • Fasten the upper front calf strap, then the upper back calf strap, and last the front thigh strap.
  • Move the knee gently a few times, check the brace is still in place and correct it if it is not.
