Lumbamed® disc is a lumbar support built to be stepped down as you recover. Compressive knit, back rods inside the panel and an outer strap system together stabilise the lower thoracic and lumbar spine and its junction with the pelvis, and each of those parts can be removed or swapped in turn.

It is for disc protrusion or prolapse treated with or without surgery, recurring lumbar dysfunction, spondyloarthrosis, lumbar overload syndrome, static muscular imbalance in the lumbar and thoracolumbar area, and any case needing the inward curve of the lower back reduced.

There are three stages: take off the strap system, then change the back rods for the more flexible ones sold as an option, then wear the knit and pad alone. That hands the work back to the trunk muscles gradually, on the schedule your doctor sets. A diamond-shaped functional zone with large air holes keeps the back breathable, hand loops make it easier to close, and a shaped cut at the groin decides whether it sits right. medi prints that this support contains rigid material, and says it can and should be worn all day at the start of treatment, particularly after an operation.

Hand wash only, in lukewarm water (about 30°C/86°F) with a mild detergent
Close all hook-and-loop (velcro) fasteners, straps, and zippers before washing to protect the fabric
Do not use fabric softener, bleach, or harsh chemicals; do not dry clean
Remove and clean any removable pads or cushions separately with water or mild soap
Air dry fully -- do not tumble dry, use a hair dryer, or dry in direct sunlight
Apply skin creams or lotions after removing the support in the evening, not right before putting it on, since they can affect the material's properties

medi publishes these steps for putting the support on. Ask a trained fitter to show you the first time.

Loosen the pull straps first: unfasten their ends and press them down further back on the velour of the belt.
Check the label on the right-hand inner fastener for which way up the support goes — the magenta edge points upwards.
Slip your left hand into the inner hand strap on the left fastening side and wrap the support around your body, checking the label again.
Slip your right hand into the outer hand strap on the right fastening side.
Pull both fastening sides to the middle and press them together evenly, keeping the back panel centred; the support is on correctly when the lower edge of the fastening is just above the pubic bone.
Unfasten the pull strap ends and draw both forward at the same time until the pressure suits you.

To change a stabilising rod, hold its lower end and pull it gently downwards along with the knit while easing the upper opening apart; the rod then slides out of its pocket, and a new one slides back in the same way. Your doctor decides when the support is stepped down.
