Lumbamed® facet is a lumbar support built around a double three-point strap system: four crossing pull straps that bear on the pelvis and the upper lumbar spine at the back, and raise the pressure around the abdomen at the front.

It is for facet joint osteoarthritis, disc protrusion or prolapse, severe lower back pain and lower back pain with sciatica, lumbago on its own and lumbago involving the sacroiliac joint, chronic pain in the lumbosacral area, spondylosis without slipping of vertebrae, spondylolisthesis, muscular imbalance, segmental instability and lumbar spinal canal stenosis.

Pulling the straps flattens the inward curve of the lower back and holds the pelvis upright, and that is what unloads the facet joints, the small joints at the back of the spine. The knit and the lower strap positioner wrap the pelvis and the sacroiliac joint completely, which matters when the sacroiliac joint is part of the problem. A shaped cut at the groin keeps it comfortable while sitting, and hand loops make it easier to close. medi prints that this support contains rigid material.

Is this the right one for you?

Choose this if the problem is the facet joints, the small joints that link the bones of your spine.

  • Hand wash only, in lukewarm water (about 30°C/86°F) with a mild detergent
  • Close all hook-and-loop (velcro) fasteners, straps, and zippers before washing to protect the fabric
  • Do not use fabric softener, bleach, or harsh chemicals; do not dry clean
  • Remove and clean any removable pads or cushions separately with water or mild soap
  • Air dry fully -- do not tumble dry, use a hair dryer, or dry in direct sunlight
  • Apply skin creams or lotions after removing the support in the evening, not right before putting it on, since they can affect the material's properties

medi publishes these steps for putting the support on. Ask a trained fitter to show you the first time.

  • Loosen the straps first: unfasten their ends and press them down further back on the velour of the belt.
  • Check the label on the right-hand inner fastener for which way up the support goes — the magenta edge points upwards.
  • Slip your left hand into the inner hand strap on the left fastening side and wrap the support around your body, checking the label again.
  • Slip your right hand into the outer hand strap on the right fastening side.
  • Pull both fastening sides to the middle and press them onto each other evenly, keeping the back panel centred; the support is on correctly when the lower edge of the fastening is just above the pubic bone.
  • Unfasten both lower pull straps and draw them forward at the same time until the pressure suits you.
  • Do the same with the upper pull straps.

medi says the support can in principle be worn all day, and that the shaped cut at the groin is what keeps it comfortable while seated; how long you wear it should follow what you need.
