medi Epico active is an elbow orthosis with a hinged splint on each side. Soft, breathable material covers the elbow, and four hook-and-loop straps hold it firmly enough for activity and sport; medi positions it as the brace for the late stage of recovery, when you are going back to doing things.

It is for early functional treatment after a purely ligamentous elbow dislocation, for preventing repeated dislocation without surgery, for medial or lateral elbow instability, and after surgery for osteochondritis dissecans, cartilage surgery, or ligament suturing or reconstruction.

The splints are polycentric, so they follow the elbow through its arc instead of turning on a single point, and they guard against varus and valgus stress — sideways force the healing joint cannot take — and against the elbow bending back past straight. Wedges fitted with the tool supplied limit extension at 10, 20, 30 or 45 degrees and flexion at 45, 60, 75 or 90. An indicator line in the elbow crease shows where the brace should sit, the strap ends cut to length, and an extra cushion can be fitted on the outer side between the joint pocket and the arm.

Not suitable for: wound healing problems or wound infections; skin problems where wounds are open; nerve damage alongside the injury, for example to the ulnar nerve; or compartment syndrome. medi also lists lymph drainage problems as a relative contraindication, meaning it needs a clinician's judgement rather than ruling the brace out.

Hand wash only, in lukewarm water (about 30°C/86°F) with a mild detergent
Close all hook-and-loop (velcro) fasteners, straps, and zippers before washing to protect the fabric
Do not use fabric softener, bleach, or harsh chemicals; do not dry clean
Remove and clean any removable pads or cushions separately with water or mild soap
Air dry fully -- do not tumble dry, use a hair dryer, or dry in direct sunlight
Apply skin creams or lotions after removing the support in the evening, not right before putting it on, since they can affect the material's properties

medi publishes these steps for putting the orthosis on. The wedges are set by a fitter first; ask to be shown once before doing it alone.

Open and loosen all the straps.
Pull the orthosis on with the arm slightly bent and the palm facing upwards.
Line the guide line up with the crease of your elbow, then bend and straighten the arm to check it has stayed there.
Fasten the strap ends in order and check the position once more.
If a strap is too long, open the hook-and-loop fastener at its end and cut it to length.
If needed, fit the cushion supplied on the outer side, between the joint pocket and the arm.
