The NEURODYN® CLASSIC is a textile foot-lifting brace. Where the muscles that lift the front of the foot have been weakened — foot drop from incomplete paralysis — the toes catch on the ground at each step; the brace holds the foot up so the step clears.

It works through straps rather than a shell. A semi-elastic figure-of-eight strap runs from the shoe up to a cuff on the lower leg and does the lifting, while a non-elasticated strap on the outer side stops the ankle rolling. Because the pull is elastic, the foot is still allowed down to the ground under control instead of slapping.

A finger sling and a hook-and-loop step-in fastener mean it can be put on with one hand, and it is thin enough to be worn with an ordinary lace-up shoe.

Not suitable for: allergic, inflamed or injury-related skin changes over the area it covers (for example swelling or redness); impaired circulation or lymphatic soft-tissue swelling; nerve-related disturbance of sensation or of skin nourishment (trophism) in that area, with or without damage to the skin.

This support may not be covered. It contains a textile brace body with a semi-elastic figure-8 strap, a non-elasticated lateral strap and a hook-and-loop step-in fastener. No manufacturer or distributor source describes it as containing rigid or semi-rigid bracing, which is what plans look for in a brace, so it is not automatically eligible. Some Canadian extended health benefit plans (e.g. Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Blue Cross, Green Shield Canada) still reimburse it when accompanied by a valid prescription from your physician or nurse practitioner. No charge, and it's not an order.

  • Wash NEURODYN CLASSIC gently in lukewarm water (30 °C) with mild detergent and air dry
  • Do not dry it in a tumble dryer, on the heating or in the microwave
  • Any loss of tension in the knitted fabric over time will be restored by washing
  • Wash the brace more frequently

Sporlastic prints these steps in the instructions for use supplied with the product.

  • Entry into the NEURODYN® CLASSIC foot lifter brace: Ideally, the NEURODYN CLASSIC foot lifter brace is worn directly on the skin. However, it can also be worn over a tight stocking. To make it easier to put on the brace, please make sure that your foot is dry when you put it on and that no foot care products (e.g. creams) are used. To put on the foot lifter brace, it is best to sit on the front edge of a chair with a stable stand.
  • Open the hook-and-loop fasteners of the brace.
  • First pull the brace over your forefoot.
  • Place the whole foot firmly on the ground.
  • Now lay straps 1, 2 and 3 out on the floor. Seen from where you are sitting, the odd-numbered straps 1 and 3 face the outside of the foot and the even-numbered strap 2 faces the inside.
  • First close the lower of the three hook-and-loop points on the lower leg, then the top one, and finally the middle one. Readjust the tension of the hook-and-loop points if necessary, so that the brace has a comfortable but stable hold on the lower leg. That stable hold matters, because it is what carries the lever forces through the straps and stops the brace slipping.
  • Now push the thigh or knee as far forward as possible, at an angle of 20-30°. Alternatively, press the front of the foot against a table leg or other firm support and push the foot towards the lower leg at the same 20-30° angle. IMPORTANT: your heel stays on the ground throughout. This gives the straps the pre-tension that supports the foot lift, so the foot has more ground clearance in the swing phase of walking and the risk of falling can be reduced.
  • Putting on strap 1: pull strap 1 straight up first, then take it under tension diagonally across the top of the foot, above the inner ankle and around the lower leg, and fix it on the hook tape at the back.
  • Putting on strap 2: lead strap 2 in the opposite direction to strap 1, over the top of the foot and above the outer ankle, and fasten it under tension over strap 1 (the figure-of-eight strap guide). Fasten strap 2 as squarely as possible onto the hook tape of strap 1, to avoid damaging socks. The figure-of-eight guide supports the forefoot lift and stabilises the upper ankle joint.
  • Putting on strap 3: last of all, lead the inelastic strap 3 up the outside of the ankle under tension, lifting the outer edge of the foot slightly with it. Then fasten strap 3 to the large loop tape of strap 2. Strap 3 must run vertically upwards, so when you put on strap 2 make sure the hook tape for strap 3 ends up positioned around the lower leg to allow that.
  • The cut-out on the strap is designed to avoid pressure points on the outer ankle. Applied correctly, strap 3 stabilises the ankle joint and should stop the ankle turning over when you walk.
  • The illustration in the instructions for use shows the foot lifter brace correctly applied. Its function and stability can be supported by a lace-up shoe.
  • How well NEURODYN CLASSIC supports the foot lift depends on applying it correctly. Pay close attention to how the knitted fabric sits and to the tension and course of the straps (no wrinkles), and readjust them if necessary. Using the brace repeatedly will give you the experience to get the best out of it.
