Spinomed® is a back orthosis for osteoporosis. An aluminium splint runs up the back, bent to the shape of your spine by an orthopaedic technician, and a strap system worn like a rucksack draws the shoulders back and holds the abdominal panel closed.

It is for osteoporotic bone collapse in the thoracic and lumbar spine, hyperkyphosis with chronic back pain, and juvenile Scheuermann's disease.

The orthosis does not hold you up; it prompts you to hold yourself up. Wearing it activates the back muscles through biofeedback, so the upper body straightens gently against the curve osteoporosis produces, and the muscles are strengthened rather than replaced. The shoulders and arms still move freely and breathing is not restricted. medi cites two randomised studies (Pfeifer et al., American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, 2004 and 2011) for gains in abdominal and back muscle strength, in vital capacity and in quality of life. A pivot joint and swivel joints on the abdominal fastener let the orthosis follow you, and the shoulder straps are pre-shaped so it goes on like a rucksack. medi prints that it contains rigid material.

Is this the right one for you?

Choose this if you need your spine actively straightened rather than just supported — for osteoporosis, a spinal fracture, a rounded upper back, or scoliosis.

Everyday muscular back pain? medi protect.CSB Posture Brace is a lighter brace for strain and fatigue.

Braces and orthoses built with rigid components are usually covered under Canadian extended health benefit plans (e.g. Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Blue Cross, Green Shield Canada) when accompanied by a valid prescription from your physician or nurse practitioner. It may also qualify as an eligible medical expense under the CRA's Medical Expense Tax Credit. • Hand wash only, in lukewarm water (about 30°C/86°F) with a mild detergent
  • Close all hook-and-loop (velcro) fasteners, straps, and zippers before washing to protect the fabric
  • Do not use fabric softener, bleach, or harsh chemicals; do not dry clean
  • Remove and clean any removable pads or cushions separately with water or mild soap
  • Air dry fully -- do not tumble dry, use a hair dryer, or dry in direct sunlight
  • Apply skin creams or lotions after removing the support in the evening, not right before putting it on, since they can affect the material's properties

medi publishes these steps for putting the orthosis on. It is worn over clothing, and it helps to stand in front of a full-length mirror.

  • Undo the large hook-and-loop fastening at the front.
  • Put the orthosis on as you would a rucksack, with the lighter side of the back splint against your back.
  • Pass your right hand through the loop on the right-hand closing side, hold the left closing side with your other hand, and close the abdominal panel. It is right when the closing edge sits immediately on top of the batten.
  • Check in the mirror that the back splint lies close against your spine, with its bottom edge level with the buttock cleft.
  • Check that no strap is twisted, that the shoulder pad does not cut into the underarm, and that the buckles do not press in at the sides.
