Lumbamed® basic is the plainest brace in medi's Lumbamed range: a compressive knit belt with four spring ribs built into the back panel, closed at the front with an anatomically shaped fastener. There are no massage pads and no pull straps.

It is for lower back pain (lumbago) and ligamentous disorders, myostatic or muscular insufficiency, irritative conditions of the facet joints, symphysiolysis, postdiscectomy syndrome, and irritative conditions of the lumbosacral transition.

The four ribs steady the lower spine and its junction with the pelvis without taking over from the muscles, so the forces running through the spine are improved and less load falls on the affected segments. Compression across the abdomen reduces lordosis (the natural inward curve of the lower back). The fastening edges fold outwards instead of digging in when you sit, and hand loops on both sides make the two halves easier to pull together. medi prints that this brace contains semi-rigid material. This is the women's cut, sized on hip circumference; the men's cut is listed separately and is sized on the waist.

Is this the right one for you?

Choose this if the pain is muscular or postural — everyday lower back pain, strain or fatigue, with no disc or joint diagnosis.

Been told it is a disc? medi Lumbamed Disc Back Support — Women is built for disc protrusion and prolapse.

Been told it is the facet joints? medi Lumbamed Facet Back Support relieves those small spinal joints specifically.

Pain lower down, across your pelvis or hips? medi Lumbamed Sacro Pelvic Support targets the joints where your spine meets your pelvis.

This is a medical-grade orthopaedic brace that incorporates semi-rigid structural support. • Hand wash only, in lukewarm water (about 30°C/86°F) with a mild detergent
  • Close all hook-and-loop (velcro) fasteners, straps, and zippers before washing to protect the fabric
  • Do not use fabric softener, bleach, or harsh chemicals; do not dry clean
  • Remove and clean any removable pads or cushions separately with water or mild soap
  • Air dry fully -- do not tumble dry, use a hair dryer, or dry in direct sunlight
  • Apply skin creams or lotions after removing the support in the evening, not right before putting it on, since they can affect the material's properties

medi publishes these steps for putting the brace on. Ask a trained fitter to show you the first time.

  • Slip your left hand into the inner hand strap on the left fastening side.
  • Take the brace around your body, then slip your right hand into the outer hand strap on the right fastening side.
  • Pull both fastening sides towards the middle and press them onto each other as evenly as you can.

medi says the brace should be worn against the skin and under clothing so the Clima Comfort knit works, that supports give their greatest effect during physical activity, and that it can in principle be worn all day as long as it stays comfortable — but it should be taken off for long periods of sitting, long drives and sleeping. It may be worn in water; rinse it thoroughly afterwards. If wearing it causes excessive pain or discomfort, take it off and seek medical advice.
