medi Classic Kidz is a knee immobiliser sized for children. Padded terry-towelling cuffs wrap around the thigh and the calf, and a removable metal rod on each side holds the leg straight, so the knee is kept still rather than guided.

It is for immobilising a child's knee after an operation, for painful conditions before surgery, and after a dislocated kneecap.

The side pieces lengthen and shorten at their hook-and-loop fastening and the inner and outer rods can be bent to shape, so each length covers a range of growing legs; the rods lift out when only the wrap is wanted. Closed correctly the wrap leaves the kneecap uncovered. The terry-towelling cover is washable and gentle against skin. Four lengths are made, 21, 26, 31 and 40 cm.

Is this the right one for you?

Choose this if you were prescribed a brace to hold the knee still or to limit how far it bends after surgery or injury.

This is a medical-grade orthopaedic brace that incorporates rigid structural support. Braces and orthoses built with rigid components are usually covered under Canadian extended health benefit plans (e.g. Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Blue Cross, Green Shield Canada) when accompanied by a valid prescription from your physician or nurse practitioner. It may also qualify as an eligible medical expense under the CRA's Medical Expense Tax Credit. We're happy to prepare an itemized estimate for your insurer — use Get an Insurance Estimate for this item, or add several to your cart and request one for everything at once. No charge, and it's not an order. Coverage details, annual limits, and prescription requirements vary by plan, so please confirm your specific benefits with your provider and keep your prescription and itemized receipt for your claim.

  • Each Size is the length of the immobiliser itself in centimetres, not a measurement of the leg. Match it to the child's leg from mid-thigh to mid-calf; the side pieces then adjust for width.

If you're not sure which size to take, contact us and we'll help you measure.

  • Hand wash only, in lukewarm water (about 30°C/86°F) with a mild detergent
  • Close all hook-and-loop (velcro) fasteners, straps, and zippers before washing to protect the fabric
  • Do not use fabric softener, bleach, or harsh chemicals; do not dry clean
  • Remove and clean any removable pads or cushions separately with water or mild soap
  • Air dry fully -- do not tumble dry, use a hair dryer, or dry in direct sunlight
  • Apply skin creams or lotions after removing the support in the evening, not right before putting it on, since they can affect the material's properties

medi publishes these steps for putting the immobiliser on. Ask a trained fitter to show you the first time.

  • Open all the straps and lay the orthosis under the child's leg.
  • If the side pieces need lengthening or shortening, open the hook-and-loop fastener on each side and refasten it at the length you want.
  • If needed, bend the inner and outer rods to the shape of the leg.
  • Wrap the sides around the leg so the kneecap stays uncovered.
  • Close the thigh straps first, then the calf straps.
  • Tighten the fastener directly above the knee again once everything is closed.
