Aspen® Pediatric Collars are designed for children rather than scaled down from an adult collar. They were developed with input from paediatric nurses, and patented flex tabs let the collar conform to and cradle a child's anatomy so the support spreads instead of pressing on one spot of fragile skin.

Five sizes, PD1 to PD5, cover roughly one month to six years. Sizing is by the child's age, weight and height rather than a neck measurement — a collar that is too tall pushes the head back, one that is too short crowds the airway and restricts less motion — and chin dots and a green strap mark on the collar show a fitter when it is on correctly.

Each set includes a spare pad set, so one can be washed while the other is worn.

Not suitable for: hypersensitivity or allergy to any of the materials the brace is made from; swelling of the lymphatic tissue (the drainage network under the skin) caused by circulatory disorders; anyone whose clinician has told them not to wear a brace.

Aspen publishes these figures in inches and pounds only; the metric ones are converted.

Peel the pads away from the hook dots to take them off the collar.
Hand wash the pads with mild soap and warm water. Do not machine wash and do not use bleach. Rinse thoroughly.
Wipe the plastic shell with mild soap and water, rinse it, and towel dry before re-attaching the pads.
Press the pads with a towel to squeeze out the water, then lay them flat to air dry. Do not use heat.
Use a spare pad set while the first one is drying.

Aspen prints these steps for a clinician fitting the collar; a first fitting should be supervised.

Choose the size from the child's age, weight and height using the chart below. A collar that is too tall pushes the head back; one that is too short can crowd the airway and restricts less motion.
Slide the back panel behind the neck.
Squeeze the collar front in half horizontally, scoop it up and under the chin so the chin piece reaches the front edge of the chin, and bring the sides up over the shoulders.
Loosely attach the back panel loop to the front panel to hold it in place.
Holding the breathing hole with one hand, peel the back panel loop outwards until the slack is gone, then secure it to the side of the front panel. Repeat on the other side, alternating until the collar is secure and centred.
On the PD3, PD4 and PD5 an occipital (the back of the head) support strap can be tightened by squeezing the back panel to the neck and pulling out the slack.
Check the fit: the chin piece should hide the chin dots on the chin pad, each strap should reach past the green mark, and the flex tabs should be loaded so the support spreads.
