The Aspen® M2 AFO is a carbon-composite ankle-foot orthosis for foot drop — where weak ankle muscles let the front of the foot fall, so it catches on the ground with every step. The footplate slides into the shoe under the insole and a shell running up the leg springs the foot back up as it swings through.

This is the posterior version, with the shell behind the calf. It is the more common arrangement, leaves the front of the shin clear, and comes in a fourth, extra-large size the anterior shell does not offer.

Aspen tested the M2 through two million flex cycles. The footplate is trimmed to the wearer's own shoe insole, and it comes in four sizes for the left or right foot.

Foot drop secondary to neurologic conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, trauma, injury or other conditions that result in weak ankle dorsiflexion function (the ability to lift the front of the foot upwards)

Not suitable for: hypersensitivity or allergy to any of the materials the orthosis is made from; neurologic conditions or injury that have left the foot with reduced sensation; excessive swelling or oedema; moderate to high muscle tone; deformity of the foot or ankle; or any other condition where a brace is not allowed on medical advice.

Aspen sizes the M2 AFO by the length of the foot: take the length that matches yours. The footplate is then trimmed to your own shoe's insole.

Aspen publishes these figures in millimetres and inches; the centimetres are converted.

Clean the soft goods with mild soap and water, rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry
Wipe the frame down with a damp cloth and allow it to air dry

Aspen prints these steps; trimming the footplate is a one-off job usually done by the fitter.

Size the orthosis by the length of the foot, then mark the footplate to size — if the shoe has a removable insole, use it as a template and trace around it.
Trim the excess material away with scissors and smooth the cut edges with sandpaper.
To shorten a strap, take the tab off, trim the strap to length and put the tab back on.
Take the insole out of the shoe, insert the orthosis, and put the insole back on top of it.
Open the straps, put the foot into the shoe with the orthosis in place, and close the straps.
Check the orthosis is not pressing on any bony prominence and is comfortable; adjust it if it is.
To take it off, loosen the straps and take the foot out of the shoe, leaving the orthosis in the shoe ready for next time.
