The RHIZO-RING® SOFT is a small ring brace worn on the thumb for rhizarthrosis — wear in the saddle joint at the base of the thumb.

Rather than splinting the thumb, it holds the saddle joint in slight abduction, the position in which the joint surfaces sit best together, and steadies it dynamically: most of the thumb’s movement and almost all of the grip are kept, which is what makes it wearable all day. The ring is thermoplastic and can be reshaped, and it can be ground down, so a fitter can take it to the exact thumb.

SOFT is the softer of the two RHIZO-RING versions: Sporlastic describes its blend as a soft material for comfort, against the firmer material of the plain RHIZO-RING. It is fitted by wrist circumference.

  • Clean RHIZO-RING SOFT with a damp cloth and wash the drawstrings gently in lukewarm water (30 °C) with mild detergent and air dry
  • Do not dry it in a tumble dryer, on the heating or in the microwave

Sporlastic prints these steps in the instructions for use supplied with the product.

  • The product is delivered with two fastening straps for changing.
  • To put on the brace, spread the thumb slightly.
  • Insert the thumb through the opening of the ring. Make sure that the ball of the thumb rests on the ergonomically shaped wide contact surface of the ring.
  • RHIZO-RING® SOFT should be placed positively between the thumb and the index finger.
  • Guide the strap through the integrated guide slot, then set the brace over the thumb saddle joint by pulling the strap across the back of the hand with a measured amount of tension and fastening it.
  • Apply as much tension to the strap as necessary until you achieve pain reduction and repositioning of the thumb saddle joint via the RHIZO-RING SOFT.
  • This supports touching the fingertips with the thumb (the opposition grip), so that grasping becomes possible again without pain.
