Rhizomed® is a thumb brace built around a light aluminium frame. It slips onto the hand and holds the two joints at the base of the thumb still — the saddle joint and the knuckle above it — while the four fingers stay completely free.

It is for a rupture of the ulnar collateral ligament, rhizarthritis, irritation of the basal and saddle thumb joints treated without surgery or after an injury or an operation (gamekeeper's thumb, for example), and immobilisation after an operation.

Stopping those two joints moving is what prevents the pain that comes with movement. The frame is an open, slip-on shape rather than an enclosing one, so no pressure falls on surgical stitches, and the aluminium can be bent by a fitter to suit the hand. Three hook-and-loop fastenings close it, at the thumb, at a pressure point on the palm and at the wrist; the wrist strap can be trimmed with scissors if it is too long. An extra strap is supplied for more thumb stability, and a pad for the back of the hand if the strap presses there. Made as a left or a right. medi prints that this brace contains rigid material.

  • Hand wash only, in lukewarm water (about 30°C/86°F) with a mild detergent
  • Close all hook-and-loop (velcro) fasteners, straps, and zippers before washing to protect the fabric
  • Do not use fabric softener, bleach, or harsh chemicals; do not dry clean
  • Remove and clean any removable pads or cushions separately with water or mild soap
  • Air dry fully -- do not tumble dry, use a hair dryer, or dry in direct sunlight
  • Apply skin creams or lotions after removing the support in the evening, not right before putting it on, since they can affect the material's properties

medi publishes these steps for putting the brace on.

  • Open all the hook-and-loop fasteners and slide the brace onto your hand.
  • Close the fastener at the thumb first, then the one at the pressure point on the palm, then tighten and secure the wrist strap.
  • If the wrist strap is too long, take off its hook-and-loop fastener and trim the strap with scissors.
  • Do not fasten the thumb strap too tightly; if it presses, loosen it, and if the pain continues speak to your fitter or doctor.
  • If the strap presses on the back of your hand, attach the pad supplied to it.
  • For extra thumb stability, attach the tab of the additional strap to the aluminium splint below the thumb strap opening, then pass the strap around the thumb and fasten it.
