The Aspen® Summit™ 456 TLSO is a soft-fronted thoracolumbar brace with two jobs: encouraging a more upright posture, and giving post-surgical support to people who do not need the motion restriction of a rigid front shell.

A belt at the waist carries a back panel and a yoke across the upper back, held by shoulder straps and a chest buckle. The yoke height is set with the posterior adjustment strap so it rests at C7 — the bony bump at the base of the neck, or roughly two inches below a shirt collar. A fitter can custom-form the back panel to the shape of the wearer's back.

Because it is low profile and easy to put on, it tends to actually get worn, which is the point of a brace prescribed for weeks at a time.

Is this the right one for you?

Choose this if you need your spine actively straightened rather than just supported — for osteoporosis, a spinal fracture, a rounded upper back, or scoliosis.

Everyday muscular back pain? Aspen Horizon PRO 637 LSO Back Brace is a lighter brace for strain and fatigue.

It may also qualify as an eligible medical expense under the CRA's Medical Expense Tax Credit. Aspen prints these steps; the first fitting of a post-surgical brace should be supervised by your clinician.

  • If needed, a fitter can custom-form the back panel to the shape of your back before the brace is worn.
  • Put the fully stretched brace on with the back panel centred and low on the back.
  • Overlap the ends so the hook material grips the opposite loop as tightly as possible; the ends can be angled to suit different builds.
  • Set the vertical height with the posterior adjustment strap so the yoke rests at C7 — the bony bump at the base of the neck, about two inches below a shirt collar.
  • Slip each thumb into the pull tabs, extend them out and away from the brace, and press the hook side onto the loop material when the compression is right.
  • Pull and tighten the shoulder straps until they fit properly.
  • Fasten and tighten the chest buckle to hold the shoulder straps in place.
