The Aspen® FLX 456 TLSO is an inelastic back brace that reaches from the lower back up over the thoracic spine, with shoulder straps that hold the upper section in place. Inelastic means the shell does not stretch as you move, so the compression you set is the compression you keep.

One brace covers four sizing positions: the inside end of each side panel peels up and moves, so the closure is set to the wearer rather than picked off a rack. Two pull tabs then tighten the brace, the left controlling the lower compression and the right the upper, which lets the top be eased off when sitting without loosening the whole brace.

It is the most covering brace in the FLX line, which otherwise runs from the low 627 lumbar belt up through the 631, 637 and 639 lumbar-sacral models.

Aspen prints these steps; the first fitting of a post-surgical brace should be supervised by your clinician.

Set the size first: peel up the inside end of each side panel, adjust until the brace closes properly, and press it back down. Aspen's sizes follow standard trouser sizing closely and are guidelines only.
Place the pull tabs about 2 inches (5 cm) from the plastic at the back of the brace, then pull the ends apart so the brace is fully extended.
Put the brace on with the back panel centred and low on the back, then wrap it firmly around the abdomen with the right side overlapping the left.
Both the top and bottom edges should feel snug. If either gapes, take it off and reapply, angling the ends — for some people quite steeply — until both edges sit close.
Slip your thumbs through the holes in the pull tabs and pull away from your body. The left tab controls the lower compression, the right tab the upper.
Press the pull tabs down onto the hook-and-loop at the front to hold the compression.
Loosen or tighten either tab as the day goes on; easing the upper portion off a little when sitting is often more comfortable.
Fit the shoulder straps, then pull them to tighten.
