Varicose Veins

Varicose veins (enlarged, twisted veins near the skin's surface) and the aching, heaviness and evening swelling that come with them are usually signs of venous insufficiency — vein valves letting blood pool in the legs instead of returning it. Graduated compression is the standard non-surgical measure: strongest at the ankle, easing up the leg, helping the veins move blood back toward the heart.

Level matters most. 15-20 mmHg suits mild aching and prevention; 20-30 mmHg is the usual starting class for diagnosed varicose veins — and the point where Canadian extended health benefit plans commonly reimburse with a prescription; 30-40 mmHg and above are for more advanced venous disease and belong with a clinician's guidance.
